The continued success of Manawa Karioi depends on a wide variety of support.
There are many opportunities for people and groups to enjoy supporting Manawa Karioi. We need volunteers to help with a wide variety of work such as controlling weeds, collecting seed, planting, nurturing plantings, looking after the nursery, maintaining tracks, surveying wildlife, raising funds, and managing projects. Please contact us if you are keen to help in any way, have any ideas you think we may be interested in or have access to resources that you think we may be able to use.
To join our general supporters email list send an email request to manawakarioisociety@gmail.com along with your full name, physical and postal addresses and phone numbers. We will send you reminders about our working bees and occasional messages about other matters relating to Manawa Karioi.
We generally have working bees on the first and second Sundays of each month (except January) between 10am and 3pm (or longer for those who are keen). Feel free to attend for the first or second half of the working bee, or the whole time. Meet at the nursery, which is signposted on the driveway from the end of Danube Street, at 10am or 1pm. There will be a note explaining where we are working for any late-comers. Lunch is around 12:15pm (BYO lunch) and the afternoon session departs from the nursery at 1:00 pm sharp. Help is needed with a variety of jobs such as weed control, planting and track maintenance. Most of the time the working conditions are very pleasant, but occasionally gorse, steep hills, wet grass, sunshine, rain or cold wind are encountered, so bring suitable clothing and footwear! Feel free to bring a few friends. Tools and gloves are provided.
How to find Manawa Karioi
For a low annual subscription fee members can keep informed about our activities through our regular newsletter, contribute to decision-making, be invited to special events and have the satisfaction of helping the Society achieve its aims. Occasionally, we also need committee members who have overall responsibility for managing the project. To become a member, gift a membership to someone else, or renew a membership, print our user-friendly membership form and follow the instructions on it.
You and your family, friends or workmates can adopt responsibility for a small part of Manawa Karioi. We will help you choose a site that suits your needs and give you guidance and resources for turning your plot into beautiful native forest. Adopting a plot is a great way to get back to nature, get fresh air and exercise and learn more about nature. It’s also a great team-building opportunity for businesses. If you are interested in adopting a plot please contact us.
Individuals and groups can adopt responsibility for assisting with the re-establishment of a chosen plant species at Manawa Karioi. We will help you choose a species that interests you and show you how to help us give it a good chance of re-establishing. If you are interested in adopting a plant please contact us.
With minimal effort you can make a big contribution towards protecting Manawa Karioi and other wild areas from pests. You can become familiar with weeds and other pests through our website and through the publications and websites produced by agencies such as your local councils and the Department of Conservation – Te Papa Atawhai. You can help prevent the spread of pests such as weeds and Argentine ants by informing your family and friends about them and by alerting local agencies and land managers about any you see.
You can dispose of weeds carefully to avoid accidentally spreading them. You can also help to prevent the spread of pests by checking items such as potted plants, soil, bark, clothing, footwear, tools, camping gear and building materials before moving them from place to place. You can avoid buying or selling “weedy” plants and avoid giving or receiving them. You can control weeds on your own property or in your neighbourhood. To join or start a “Weedbusters” group to tackle weeds in your local area visit www.weedbusters.org.nz.
If you would like to help control weeds at Manawa Karioi please contact us so we can arrange a project that suits your needs.
If you think you may be able to help us obtain useful equipment and materials please contact us.
